5 sustainable Irish clothing brands and how they're doing it

Although sustainable fashion is only now entering the public consciousness in substantial way, there is already a burgeoning scene here in Ireland. Here are 5 sustainable Irish clothing brands and how they're working to make sustainable clothing.

Fianna


Fianna is a sustainable clothing brand for everyone who lives an active green lifestyle. Their mission is to champion and be part of the shift to a sustainable and ethical fashion industry.

Fianna clothing is made of Organic Content Standard (OCS) certified cotton and Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certified recycled polyester.

Fianna is also a Carbon Neutral brand, partnered with One Tree Planted and uses 100% recycled/recyclable mailers with no internal packaging. 

Baile

Níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin (there's no Fireside like your own), feel warm and cozy yet? This is what it feels like to wear Baile, a sustainable comfort wear brand all about the snug feeling of being at home and having a link back to Ireland.

Baile partners with manufacturers who are members of Textile Exchange, a global non-profit with a mission to accelerate the adoption of preferred fibers (“ecologicallyand/or socially progressive, with more sustainable properties in comparison to conventional options”) and responsible supply chains. 

Baile is also partnered with One Tree Planted and uses 100% compostable, biodegradable and plastic free mailer bags for their deliveries. 

Due South

Since 2016 Due South’s profound mission of putting  ‘forward a vision of Ireland we can be proud of’ has been reflected in their clothing through their understated but beautiful designs. The brand offers a collection of unique designs, printed in Ireland and available in a range of clothing or heavy duty shopping bags.

Due South partners with a Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified manufacturer to create mostly 100% organic cotton clothing at times using an inner layer of Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certified recycled polyester. GOTS provides assurance at every step of the manufacturing process from harvesting of the raw materials, environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing to labelling. GRS certifies that materials are recycled.

Due South is also partnered with One Tree Planted and Empower Eco. Empower generates value from plastic they collect in the world’s oceans, including creating livelihoods for the underprivileged. 

Alice Aalliday

Alice Haliday brings magic, elegance and wonder to your wardrobe with one of a kind creations inspired by nature and nostalgia. The brand’s collection includes dresses, trousers and belts as well as more unique items like tunics, capes and headpieces. 

Alice specializes in sustainable couture, meaning her pieces are hand crafted using reclaimed vintage materials. Alice is based in Cork and materials are sourced locally.

Oceanera

Oceanera is a sustainable clothing brand inspired by the ocean lifestyle. 

The brand’s goal is to help reduce plastic from finding its way into the world’s oceans. They offer a range of plastic free products including organic cotton leisurewear clothing. 

Oceanera hoodies are made of Organic Content Standard (OCS) certified cotton and Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) certified polyester. OCS verifies that materials come from certified organic farms, RCS sets conditions for third-party certification of recycled input and chain of custody.

Oceanera is also certified by PETA as an approved vegan brand, meaning that no animal testing or products are used in the creation of their products.
